How to share desktops in OS X - 11/02/2010

Unveiling my new 27 inch iMac posed a bit of a problem when it came to workflow.  I spend a lot of my time doing working on my laptop yet I did not want to migrate all of my productivity tools over to my new box, especially if its just to answer a few dozen emails in Outlook.  So I needed a way to share my laptops desktop with my iMac.

What I found was that through iChat you are able to share desktops over bonjour.  So here is the complete process:

Step 1

Turn on iChat for both systems.

Step 2

Enable desktop share for the machine you would like to share.

Step 3

Accept the invite from the machine you want to sit in front of to do your work.

Of course, if I close to lid to my laptop I won’t be able to see anything since it enters sleep mode – but I’m working on that.-)
